Anomalous Enthalpy Relaxation in Vitreous Silica

چکیده

It is a challenge to calorimetrically determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) of vitreous silica. Here, we demonstrate that this challenge mainly arises from the extremely high sensitivity of the Tg to the hydroxyl content, but also from decrease of the Tg with repeating the calorimetric scans. It is known that the liquid fragility (i.e., the speed of the viscous slow-down of a supercooled liquid at its Tg during cooling) has impact on enthalpy relaxation in glass. Here, we find that vitreous silica (as a strong system) exhibits striking anomalies in both glass transition and enthalpy relaxation compared to fragile oxide systems. The anomalous enthalpy relaxation of vitreous silica is discovered by performing the hyperquenching-annealing-calorimetry experiments. We argue that the strong systems like vitreous silica and vitreous Germania relax in a structurally cooperative manner, whereas the fragile ones do in a structurally independent fashion. We discuss the origin of the anomalous enthalpy relaxation in the HQ vitreous silica.

Anomalous thermomechanical properties and laser-induced densification of vitreous silica

The authors studied the anomalous behaviors of vitreous silica under the combined influence of high temperature and pressure, by using molecular dynamics simulations based on a charge-transfer three-body potential. Accordingly, anomalous properties, such as the minimum in the bulk modulus at 2–3 GPa and the negative thermal expansion while under pressure, are inherently connected to the ability...

Anomalous phonon behavior: blueshift of the surface boson peak in silica glass with increasing temperature.

We present helium atom scattering measurements of the boson peak at the surface of vitreous silica between 127.0 and 368.5 K. The most probable energy shows a strong temperature dependence and increases linearly with temperature in the measured range. The observed blueshift of the surface boson peak (shift rate 0.008+/-0.002 meV/K) is a factor of 4 to 10 times stronger than shift rates measured...

Thermodynamic Origin of the Vitreous Transition

The vitreous transition is characterized by a freezing of atomic degrees of freedom at a temperature Tg depending on the heating and cooling rates. A kinetic origin is generally attributed to this phenomenon instead of a thermodynamic one which we develop here. Completed homogeneous nucleation laws reflecting the energy saving due to Fermi energy equalization of nascent crystals and their melt ...

On the energy landscape at the glass transition

A recent hypothesis claims that the glass transition itself, though it is a very pronounced relaxation peak, is no separate relaxation process at all, but is just the breakdown of the shear modulus due to the weak elastic dipole interaction between all the quasi-independent relaxation centers of the glass. Two derivations are considered, one of them in terms of a breakdown of the shear modulus ...
